If you were previously married in Hong Kong and need a certified copy of your marriage certificate, you may request a record search and obtain an official copy. Below is an overview of how and where to apply, expected processing times, applicable fees, and collection methods.

Present your Hong Kong Identity Card or valid travel document at the time of application. - Online applications:
You must show your Hong Kong Identity Card or valid travel document when collecting the certificate or search results. - By post:
Include a copy of your Hong Kong Identity Card or valid travel document.
If you’re applying on behalf of someone else (the registered person), you must provide:
- A copy of the registered person’s Hong Kong Identity Card or valid travel document
- Written authorization or consent from the registered person
If you are not the registered individual, their authorized representative, or do not hold a signed consent letter, you must submit additional documentation, such as:
- Explanation of your relationship to the registered individual
- Purpose of your request
- Intended use of the search result or record
- Any relevant supporting documents

Hong Kong Prenuptial Agreement Terms
A prenuptial agreement is a contract signed by two individuals before they officially marry. It outlines how property and assets will be handled in the event of a divorce. Typically, such agreements specify that one party cannot claim part or all of the other party’s property after separation. Some prenuptial agreements go further, stating that no claims can be made on specific assets or on the entirety of a spouse’s property. In essence, a prenuptial agreement sets the terms for asset division should the marriage end.

Marriage Records and Certified Copies in Hong Kong
According to the Immigration Department, marriage records in Hong Kong serve the following purposes:
- To allow the Registrar of Marriages to maintain official records of all marriages in Hong Kong, in accordance with the Marriage Ordinance and its related regulations.
- To verify a person’s identity, age, marital status, family relationship, or for other legal purposes as authorized or permitted by law.
When reviewing an application, the Registrar will consider all supplementary details submitted by the applicant, including:
- The stated purpose for requesting or searching the records
- The intended use of the obtained documents
- Any supporting materials provided (if applicable)
All applications are evaluated in accordance with relevant laws and regulations.

How long does it take to get a replacement marriage certificate?
- For in-person applications: processing time is usually around 10 minutes.
- For online applications: typically takes 10–20 minutes.
- If a record search is required, it takes approximately 7 working days to locate the marriage record and issue a certified copy (working days are Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays).
- Note: Processing times may vary during peak periods or for more complex cases.

Where to apply for a marriage certificate
In-person submission
- The record search fee must be paid when submitting the application.
- The fee for the certified copy is paid upon collection.
- Accepted payment methods: Hong Kong dollars (cash), EPS, Octopus, FPS, crossed cheque or cashier’s order made payable to “The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.”
- Post-dated cheques are not accepted.
- Submit the search fee together with the completed application form.
- If a record is found, the applicant will be notified to pay the certified copy fee and any applicable airmail postage.
- Once payment is received, the certified copy will be mailed.
- Local payments: crossed cheque or cashier’s order in Hong Kong dollars.
- Overseas payments: Hong Kong dollar bank draft payable to “The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.”
- Do not send cash. Online payment options are available.

Marriage record search: HK$140–1,500 (self-service is cheaper).
Certified copy of marriage certificate: HK$280–3,500 per copy (lower cost if handled independently).
